What is HSA/FSA? How does it help me Save Money?

HSA/FSA accounts were created so individuals could use pretax money to pay for expenses incurred in the prevention or alleviation of a disease. Because HSA/FSA uses tax-free money, you’re getting more purchasing power for your dollars. Rather than pay taxes on income and then spend it on health items, qualified customers can use pre-tax funds to invest in their health. HSAs require enrollment in a high-deductible health plan and allow contributions from both individuals and employers, with unused funds rolling over each year. FSAs are offered by employers, funded by employee contributions, and may have limited rollover options or a grace period for using funds. HSAs are portable and stay with you if you change jobs, while FSAs are not portable.

HSA - The Ultimate Investment Account that I Never have to Pay Taxes on?

A HSA is like an IRA for your medical expenses. Unlike traditional or Roth 401Ks and IRAs where you either get taxed when you contribute or when you pull your money out, with a HSA you are neither taxed on the contribution nor when you pull your money out. You can invest your HSA just like any other retirement account. After you turn 65, the HSA becomes identical to a traditional IRA and can be used for non-medical expenses. HSA 2025 contributions are $4,300 for self-only, $8,550 for a family. Indviduals 55 and older can contribute an additional $1,000 per year.

Frequently Asked Questions

HSA/FSA accounts were created so individuals could use pre-tax money to pay for expenses used to treat, mitigate, or prevent a diagnosed medical condition. Because HSA/FSAs use pre-tax money, you’re getting more purchasing power for your dollars. Rather than pay taxes on income and then spend it on health items, qualified customers can use pre-tax funds to invest in their health.

An individual can contribute up to $4,150 pretax to their HSA per year, or $8,300 for a family (plus an additional $1,000 if you are at least 55 years old). Individuals can contribute up to $3,200 pretax to their FSA per year (with an additional $500 in employer contributions allowed).

Savings amount depends on your federal and state income tax brackets, which is determined by your annual taxable income.

At checkout, you’ll have the option to “Pay with HSA/FSA funds.” This will direct you to the Truemed site where you will take a brief health intake survey asking if you are working to treat, mitigate, or prevent a chronic health condition. Once you’ve completed the survey, enter your payment details – either your HSA/FSA card or a credit/debit card – to complete the checkout process. After checkout, your answers will be reviewed by a licensed medical provider and you will be emailed a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) if you qualify. If you do not qualify, your purchase will be refunded.

Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) are tax-free accounts that can be used to pay for qualified health expenses (up to certain limits established by the IRS). These accounts are usually set up and managed by an HSA or FSA administrator, and you may have access to these accounts through your employer. HSAs are typically associated with a high-deductible health plan, and funds do not expire. FSAs are independent of your health plan, and funds elections occur in October-November each year for the following calendar year. FSA funds expire every calendar year. To learn more, please send an email to support@truemed.com.

Truemed partners with health and wellness brands to enable qualified customers to use pre-tax HSA/FSA funds on health and wellness purchases. Truemed partners with a network of medical practitioners who can issue Letters of Medical Necessity to qualifying customers, thereby allowing customers to spend pre-tax HSA/FSA funds on medically-necessary health and wellness products. For more information, please send an email to support@truemed.com.

HSA/FSA accounts are typically offered through employers. If you're unsure whether you have an HSA or FSA, you can check with your employer's HR department or your benefits administrator.

Yes. If you prefer to use your regular credit card, Truemed will send you instructions on how to submit for reimbursement from your HSA//FSA administrator.

Using your HSA/FSA funds on eligible products can result in significant savings. These accounts use pre-tax dollars, which means, if qualified by an independent licensed provider, you could save up to 40% on your purchases at Truemed’s partner brands to prevent or reverse a specific condition.

If you don't have an HSA/FSA card, you can pay with a credit or debit card to complete your eligible purchase using the Truemed checkout option. After you complete Truemed's qualification survey, you can submit payment via Truemed. Truemed will email your Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) if you qualify along with detailed instructions on how to submit your payment to your HSA/FSA plan administrator for reimbursement. If you do not qualify, there’s no need to worry - your purchase will be refunded. You will need to submit your LMN and purchase receipt to your HSA/FSA plan administrator for reimbursement from your HSA/FSA funds. For more information please send an email to support@Truemed.com.

The items in your Truemed Letter of Medical Necessity (“LMN”) are now qualified health expenses in the same way a visit to the doctor’s office or pharmaceutical product is.

There are thousands of studies showing food and exercise is often the best medicine to prevent and reverse disease. Exercise qualifies as a qualified medical expense with an LMN. Food, supplements, and other wellness purchases qualify as medical expenses if they treat or prevent an illness, and a doctor substantiates the need. Your Truemed LMN satisfies all IRS requirements to make your wellness spend fully reimbursable.

Please email support@truemed.com if you have any questions or need assistance.

The intake form is only a few questions. No live consultation with a doctor is required. Generally it takes 24-48 hours. In some cases, Truemed’s provider team will require additional time to issue a letter of medical necessity based on the needs associated with an individual qualification survey. If you aren’t seeing your letter in your inbox, check spam, then reach out to us at support@truemed.com for help.

Each Letter is valid for 12 months before it needs to be renewed.

Yes. A medical practitioner can issue a Letter of Medical Necessity to a patient who meets the requirements to qualify to use HSA/FSA funds on health and wellness purchases, as set forth by the Internal Revenue Service.

For most Americans, open enrollment is in the last four months of the year. Simply elect to increase contributions to your HSA or FSA during this time and you can begin shopping with Truemed merchant partners. Starting on January 1st, qualified individuals will be able to spend their entire HSA amount on products that our independent provider partners determine to be effective intervention to prevent/reverse specific health conditions. This money will be pulled from your paycheck by your HSA administrator (tax free) in equal installments through the year.

No. You can’t apply your HSA/FSA funds to a past purchase. Please contact your HSA or FSA administrator directly to learn more about your eligibility for reimbursement.
